Alfredas Jomantas has been working for the Ministry of Culture of Lithuania since 1991, shortly after the reestablishment of Lithuanian independence. From 1992 through 1997, he served as Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO. He has been with the Department of Cultural Heritage since 1997, managing the international cooperation in connection to cultural heritage; his area of responsibility embraces also public relations and the Register of Cultural Heritage in Lithuania. A. Jomantas is a former chair of the Steering Committee of Cultural Heritage and Landscape at the Council of Europe. Since 2000, he has been involved with different projects of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe in Lithuania, the one of the Jewish cultural heritage in particular. He was chairing the Monitoring Group on Cultural Heritage in the Baltic Sea States in 2009–2011. In 2013, he was responsible to organise the conference “‘Cultural heritage and the EU2020 strategy – towards an integrated approach” in the frame of Lithuanian Presidency to the EU Council.
